Three things, and you decide which of them run
Most people start with one. Each switches on and off on its own — from the menu bar, from the window itself or from the app — including in the middle of a call. What is off is not billed.
Live translation
Follow a call in a language you do not speak
Every line appears as it is spoken: the original on the left, your language on the right, level with it. First words land about half a second after they are said, so you are listening with subtitles rather than reading the past.

Know what to say when you are put on the spot
A second window suggests an answer in the other person's language, built from what was just said and from the context you gave the meeting: your role, the goal, the numbers, the documents you attached.
- Auto mode answers a question addressed to you and offers a line when the other side finishes a thought

Notes and summary
Leave the call with the notes already written
The conversation is kept on your machine: full transcript, a summary of what was agreed, and a task list drawn from it. Audio is never part of that — only text.

Marked as protected content, so a shared screen or a recording does not contain them. Not magic: a camera pointed at your monitor still sees everything.

Install, allow the microphone and system audio, and press Start. Everything else is optional.

Tell Subtl about the meeting
Goal, your role, the documents, the names. Two minutes before the call, and the answer drafts use your numbers instead of generic phrases.

Subtl reads the audio from the device itself. No bot in the room, no plugin in the meeting app, no notification to the other participants.

Read, then speak
The original, the translation and a draft answer in the other person's language appear within a couple of seconds. The overlay is excluded from screen sharing.
What happens to your audio
The short version: it is not stored, it does not have to leave your Mac at all, and the windows are not in your screen share.
Or send nothing at all
Switch recognition to your own machine and the call never leaves it. No cloud, no provider, nothing to intercept — because nothing is sent. It costs a one-time model download and some speed, and you choose per call.
Audio is never stored
It exists in the memory of your device and in transit over TLS to the transcription provider. It is not written to disk and not kept on our servers.
Hidden from screen sharing
The windows are marked as protected content, so a shared screen or a recording does not contain them. A camera pointed at your monitor still does.

Questions people ask first
Which call apps does it work with?
Any application that plays sound on your Mac: Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Telegram, WhatsApp Desktop, FaceTime, Discord, and the ones we have not tested. Capture happens at the system-audio level, so nothing is installed into the call app and no meeting bot joins.
Is it legal to translate a call?
It depends on where you and the other people are. Subtl does not record audio, but several jurisdictions treat live interception the way they treat recording, and some require every party to consent. We keep a per-jurisdiction summary on the legality page, and following the rules where you are is your responsibility.
What does “hidden from screen sharing” actually cover?
The overlay window is marked as protected content, so when you share a window or your whole screen in Zoom, Meet, Teams or Discord, the shared image does not contain it. It does not cover a camera pointed at your monitor, a second person in your room, a screen recorder that captures at the driver level, or anything the meeting host records on their side. We will not tell you that nobody can ever know.
Is my audio or my transcript sent anywhere?
Audio goes to the transcription provider over TLS and is not stored by us. Transcripts stay on your device unless you switch cloud sync on. Files you attach for context are stored as text chunks and embeddings on our server and expire 30 days after last use.
How accurate is the translation?
Good on clear speech and full sentences, worse on crosstalk, heavy accents and single words. We do not claim perfect accuracy in any language, and we would rather you treat a draft answer as a draft.
What happens when the free minutes run out?
A warning appears before the limit and the session stops at it. Your call is unaffected — Subtl is not in the audio path of the call itself.
