Discord voice chat translation without a bot in the server
Translation bots in Discord join the voice channel, appear in the member list, and need a server admin to invite them. Subtl does none of that. It reads the audio your Mac plays, which means it works in a server you do not administer, in a direct call, and in a stage channel you are only listening to.
For international teams that run stand-ups in a Discord voice channel, this is the difference between following the meeting and reconstructing it afterwards.

Setting it up with Discord

Join the voice channel as usual
The Discord desktop app and Discord in a browser both work. Nothing is configured inside Discord.

Decide between push-to-talk and voice activity
Both are fine. Subtl reads your microphone separately from the incoming audio, so your own speech is labelled as yours either way.

Set a preset for the recurring meeting
A preset with the team's vocabulary and the project's names is worth more here than anywhere else, because the same terms come up every day.
What works
- Voice channels, stage channels, and direct calls in the Discord desktop app or in a browser.
- Servers where you are a plain member — no bot invite, no admin permission needed.
- Screen sharing and Go Live: the overlay is flagged as protected content and is excluded from what you share.
- Gaming voice chat, though heavy background audio in the same output device makes transcription harder.
What it does not do
- Everyone in the channel arrives on one audio channel, so the text does not attribute lines to individual users.
- Discord's own overlay and Subtl's overlay can end up in the same corner; move one of them.
- Use headphones. Subtl reads the speaker channel and your microphone separately, and without headphones your microphone picks up the other person through the speakers, which blurs the two channels.
Questions about Discord
Do I need to invite a bot to the server?
No. That is the main reason to use Subtl here instead of a translation bot: nothing joins the server, nothing appears in the member list, and no administrator has to approve anything.
Will other members know I am translating?
Discord shows them nothing. Some communities have their own rules about assistive tools — those rules still apply to you, and following them is your responsibility.
Can it separate different speakers in a voice channel?
Not by name. Audio is split into 'you' and 'everyone else', so a busy channel reads as a single stream of speech.
Does it work while I am playing a game?
Yes, though game audio going to the same output device is mixed into what Subtl hears and lowers transcription quality. Routing the game to a different device helps.
Does it slow down my machine?
The overlay measured about a quarter of a percent of CPU while text streamed, against a three-percent budget. Transcription runs in the cloud today, so the local cost is small.
